Rambo: First blood (1982)
In the first 3 minutes the audience can not establish that it is an action film as the opening shot if very calm and has Rambo just walking down a path looking very lonesome, with a song in the background. But this instrumental is at a very low pitch and to me personally sounds sad. Judging by the clothes he is wearing you can tell that this is some sort of action film as he is wearing and army jacket, which suggests that he has fought in a war.
The reason why I like this film is, that the title tells you that it is going to be a gripping film, also the actor in it Sylvester Stallone is a great actor that has done many amazing films in the past in addition the calm start tells me that there is going to be an opposite at the end, were there is going to be large explosions and certainly won’t be calm.
In the first 3 minutes you can tell that Rambo is a war veteran and has gone searching for his friend who he finds out had died the previous year.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
The opening of the film tells the audience that it is a science fiction action film because it shows a view of the present day then flashes forward to the year 2029A.D. In the present day it shows a motor way and how normal life is in Los Angeles then the flash-forward shows how the city is destroyed with the camera panning across debris with skeletons and more wreckage. In addition they show a park which they show in the present day and a representation of it in the future when it is destroyed. Also at the end of the opening scene it shows a big explosion and flames.
What I like about this opening is the voice over that is going through the scene when the camera is panning across the debris as it tell the audience what happened and what they are going to do to prevent it from happening. Also the wreckage catches my attention as I want to watch on to know how they prevent it from happening and what will happen in the present day.
In the first 3 minutes the audience finds out why there is so much wreckage and what is going to be done to prevent it from happening.
Green Street (2004)
The opening of this film shows generic conventions by the clothing worn by the character and the large gang of people which affiliates it with gang culture. Also the standoff between both train platform shows that there is going to be a fight, therefore you can tell that this is going to be an action drama film.
The reason I like this film is because it has action from the beginning with only a little build up which is enough to tell the audience what the film is based on and what is going to happen.
In the first 3 minutes you know what the film is going to be about which is “football hooliganism” also you know that it has a link to a student that is studying at Harvard, because after the street brawl it transitions to Harvard and shows a student packing away his things.
